১) জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিং ( Jack Worthing ) :

নাটকের প্রধান নায়ক জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিং । তার বয়স ২৯ বছর। হার্টফোর্ডশায়ারে তিনি জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিং ( Jack Worthing ) নামে পরিচিত। আর লন্ডনে তিনি আর্নেস্ট ( Ernest) নামে পরিচিত।

২) গোয়েনডোলেন ফেয়ারফ্যাক্স ( Gwendolen Fairfax ) :

নাটকের প্রধান নায়িকা গোয়েনডোলেন ( Gwendolen) লেডি ব্রাকনেলের সুন্দরী মেয়ে । গোয়েনডোলেন ও আর্নেস্ট ( জ্যাক) দুজন একে অপরকে ভালোবাসে এবং বিয়ে করতে চায় । গোয়েনডোলেন চাইতো, আর্নেস্ট নামে কোনো ছেলের সাথে তার বিয়ে হবে।

৩) লেডি ব্রাকনেল ( Lady Bracknell ) :

অ্যালজারননের দাম্ভিক ও অর্থলোভী খালা ও গোয়েনডোলেনের মা — লেডি ব্রাকনেল ( Lady Bracknell ) । তিনি একজন আভিজাত্যপূর্ণ মহিলা ।

৪) অ্যালজারনন মনক্রিয়েফ ( Algernon Moncrieff ) :

নাটকের দ্বিতীয় নায়ক অ্যালজারনন মনক্রিয়েফ । তিনি জ্যাকের ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু এবং লেডি ব্রাকনেলের বোনের ছেলে।

৫) সিসিলি কার্ডিউ ( Cecily Cardew ) :

১৮ বছর বয়সের সুন্দরী এক মেয়ে সিসিলি কার্ডিউ । তার অভিভাবক জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিং ।

৬) লেন ( Lane ) : অ্যালজারননের গৃহপরিচারিকার নাম লেন ( Lane ) ।

৮) মিস প্রিজম ( Miss Prism ) : সিসিলি কার্ডিউর গভর্নেস ( Governess ) মিস প্রিজম ।

৯) মেরিম্যান (Merriman ) : জ্যাকের চাকর ।

১০) ড. চেসুবল ( Dr. Chasuble ) :

জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিং এর গ্রামের গির্জার যাজক ড. চেসুবল । তিনি অকৃতদার কিন্তু মিস প্রিজম কে পছন্দ করেন.

জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিং হার্টফোর্ডশায়ারে একটি গ্রামে থাকেন যেখানে তার জমিদারি খামার বাড়ি আছে । সেখানে সিসিলি কার্ডিউ, গভর্নেস মিস প্রিজম , আর চাকরদের নিয়ে তার বসবাস। জ্যাক হলো সিসিলি কার্ডিউর অভিভাবক । জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিংকে আঙ্কেল বলে ডাকে সিসিলি ।

সিসিলি মূলত মি. টমাস কার্ডিউর নাতনি ।

জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিংকে মি. টমাস কার্ডিউর ভিক্টোরিয়া রেলওয়ে স্টেশনে কুড়িয়ে পেয়েছিলেন । সেখান থেকে তুলে এনে নিজের ছেলের মত তাকে লালন পালন করেন। মৃত্যুর পূর্বে জ্যাককে তার সম্পত্তি দেখাশোনার দ্বায়িত্ব দিয়ে যান এবং তার নাতনি সিসিলির অভিভাবক বানিয়ে যান ।

জ্যাকের দ্বৈত পরিচয় রয়েছে । হার্টফোর্ডশায়ারে তিনি জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিং নামে পরিচিত । আর লন্ডনে তিনি আর্নেস্ট ( Earnest ) নামে পরিচিত । হার্টফোর্ডশায়ার থেকে তিনি প্রায়ই লন্ডনে যেতেন, সবাইকে বলে যেতেন লন্ডনে তার এক ভাই আছে, যার নাম আর্নেস্ট । আর্নেস্ট এর সাথে দেখা করতেই সে লন্ডনে যায় । আসলে আর্নেস্ট নামে তার কোনো ভাই ছিলোনা।

এই কথা গুলো জ্যাক তার ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু অ্যালজারননকে বলেন । কারন,অ্যালজারনন এসব ঘটনা জানতো না । জ্যাক কে “”আর্নেস্ট ” নামেই চিনিতো অ্যালজারনন ।

অ্যালজারনন (Algernon ) থাকেন লন্ডনে । অ্যালজারননের খালা লেডি ব্রাকনেল ,, অ্যালজারননের খালাতো বোন গোয়েনডোলেন ফেয়ারফেক্স ।

জ্যাকের লন্ডনে আসার মূল কারন ছিলো এই গোয়েনডোলেনের সাথে দেখা করা ।

আর্নেস্ট (জ্যাক) ও গোয়েনডোলেন একে অপরকে পছন্দ করে । অ্যালজারননের অ্যাপার্টমেন্টে বসে আর্নেস্ট ( জ্যাক) ও গোয়েনডোলেন নিজেদের অনুভূতির কথা একে অপরকে জানায়। তারা একে অপরকে ভালোবাসে এবং বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দেয় ।

কিন্তু আর্নেস্ট ( জ্যাক) আর গোয়েনডোলেনের বিয়ের পথে বাধা হয়ে দাড়ায় গোয়েনডোলেনের মা লেডি ব্রাকনেল (Lady Bracknell ) ।

সম্ভাব্য জামাতা হিসাবে আর্নেস্টের যোগ্যতা নির্ধারণ করতে লেডি ব্র্যাকনেল জ্যাকের সাক্ষাৎকার নেন এবং এই সাক্ষাৎকারের সময় তিনি তার পারিবারিক পটভূমি, তার বার্ষিক আয়, সে কোন রাজনৈতিক দলকে সমর্থন করে — এসব সম্পর্কে জিজ্ঞাসা করেন, । আর্নেস্ট ( জ্যাক) তখন ব্যাখা করেন যে তাঁর বাবা-মা কে ছিলেন তা তিনি জানেনা এবং তাকে ভিক্টোরিয়া স্টেশনের ক্লোকরুমের একটি হ্যান্ডব্যাগে খুঁজে পায় মি. টমাস কার্ডিউ ।

এটা শুনে লেডি ব্রাকনেল বলেন, এরকম কোনো এতিম, বংশপরিচয়হীন ছেলের সাথে সে তার মেয়ের বিয়ে দেবেন না।

কিন্তু গোয়েনডোলেন জ্যাককেই বিয়ে করতে চায় তার মায়ের সম্মতি ছাড়াই।

চিঠির মাধ্যমে যোগাযোগ করার জন্য, আর্নেস্ট ( জ্যাক ) যখন গোয়েনডোলেনকে হার্টফোর্ডশায়ারে এর গ্রামের ঠিকানা দেয়, অ্যালজারনন সেই ঠিকানাটা লিখে রাখে।

অ্যালজারনন পরিকল্পনা করে যে সে সিসিলি কে দেখতে যাবে । কারন, সিসিলিকে তার পছন্দ ।

তারপর অ্যালজারনন জ্যাককে কিছু না জানিয়েই জ্যাকের বাড়িতে যায় জ্যাকের ভাই আর্নেস্ট পরিচয়ে । জ্যাক তখন বাড়িতে ছিলোনা।

সিসিলি আর অ্যালজারননের মধ্যে আলাপকালে তারা একে অন্যকে ভালোবেসে ফেলে । এখানে সিসিলি অ্যালজারননকে “” আর্নেস্ট “” নামে চেনে। তার আসল নাম যে অ্যালজারনন ,, এটা সিসিলি জানেনা।

ইতোমধ্যে গোয়েনডোলেন আর্নেস্টের ( জ্যাকের) গ্রামের বাড়িতে এসে পৌছায় । বাড়ির বাগানে সিসিলির সাথে তার দেখা। গোয়েনডোলেন এসে আর্নেস্টের কথা বলে যে আর্নেস্ট তাকে বিয়ে করবে । এটা শুনে সিসিলি তো অবাক। আসলে, গোয়েনডোলেন জ্যাককে আর্নেস্ট নামেই চেনে, জ্যাক নামে চেনে না।

অন্যদিকে সিসিলি অ্যালজারননকে আর্নেস্ট নামে চেনে ।

অর্থাৎ এখানে গোয়েনডোলেন আর সিসিলি দুজনেরই ভালোবাসার মানুষের নাম আর্নেস্ট । আসল ব্যাপারটা হলো, জ্যাক লন্ডনে আর্নেস্ট নামে পরিচিত আর অ্যালজারনন গ্রামে এসে নিজেকে আর্নেস্ট নামে পরিচয় দিয়েছে।

এই দ্বন্ধের অবসান হলো যখন জ্যাক বাড়িতে এসে পৌছালো। সে সব কিছু খুলে বললো । আর্নেস্ট নামটা যে আসলে কল্পকাহিনি। আর্নেস্ট নামে আসলে কেউ ছিলোনা। এবার সত্যিটা জেনে সবাই সাচ্ছন্দ্যবোধ করলো ।

এদিকে গোয়েনডোলেনের মা লেডি ব্রাকনেল ও এসে হাজির হলো জ্যাকের বাড়িতে । মেয়েকে ফিরিয়ে নিতে এসেছেন তিনি।

অ্যালজারনন তার খালা লেডি ব্রাকনেলকে জানান যে, সে সিসিলিকে বিয়ে করবে ।

যেহেতু সিসিলি অনেক সম্পদের মালিক হবে প্রাপ্ত বয়স্ক হলে,, লেডি ব্রাকনেল তাই অ্যালজারনন ও সিসিলির বিয়েতে সম্মতি দিলো।

কিন্তু জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিং লেডি ব্রাকনেলকে বলেন, গোয়েনডোলেন কে তার সাথে বিয়ে না দিলে,,

সিসিলি ও অ্যালজারনন এর বিয়ে হবে না । কারন,, সিসিলির অভিভাবক জ্যাক । অভিভাবকের সম্মতি ছাড়া বিয়ে হবে না।

এর মধ্যে মিস প্রিজম আসে যিনি হলেন সিসিলির গভর্নেস । মিস প্রিজম কে দেখে লেডি ব্রাকনেল চিনে ফেলে এবং ২৮ বছর আগের সেই ঘটনার বর্ননা করেন যে এই সেই গভর্নেস যাকে লেডি ব্রাকনেলের বোন তার দুই ছেলেকে দেখাশোনার জন্য গভর্নেস হিসেবে চাকরি দিয়েছিলো ।

মিস প্রিজম লজ্জিত হয়ে লেডি ব্রাকনেলকে বলে যে তার ভুলের জন্যই লেডি ব্রাকনেলের বোন তার বড় ছেলেকে হারিয়ে ফেলেছিল। মিস প্রিজম বলে , ভিক্টোরিয়া স্টেশনে তার একটা হ্যান্ডব্যাগের সাথে সে লেডি ব্রাকনেলের বোনের ছেলেকে হারিয়ে ফেলেছিল ।

হ্যান্ডব্যাগের কথা শুনেই জ্যাক ওয়ার্থিং লাইব্রেরি থেকে সেই পুরনো হ্যান্ডব্যাগ টা নিয়ে আসে, যেটার মধ্যে মি. টমাস কার্ডিউ জ্যাককে পেয়েছিলেন।

হ্যান্ডব্যাগটি দেখে মিস প্রিজম বলে উঠলো, এটা তার সেই ব্যাগ টি ই ।

এবার সব রহস্য পরিষ্কার হয়ে গেলো। জ্যাকের আসল জন্মপরিচয় প্রকাশ পেয়ে গেলো। এই জ্যাক ই হলো লেডি ব্রাকনেলের আপন বোনের হারিয়ে যাওয়া সেই ছেলে ।

অর্থাৎ অ্যালজারননের আপন বড় ভাই ই জ্যাক ।

এতোদিন নিজের অজান্তেই জ্যাক “”আর্নেস্ট “” নামটা ব্যবহার করে আসছিলো, এবং আর্নেস্ট তার আসল নাম ই। কারন জ্যাকের বাবার নাম আর্নেস্ট জন মনক্রিয়েফ ছিলো।

নাটকের শেষে মিল হয় তিন জোড়া প্রেমিক প্রেমিকার — আর্নেস্ট ( জ্যাক) ও গোয়েনডোলেন ,,,,, অ্যালজারনন ও সিসিলি,,,,, এবং ড. চেসুবল ও মিস প্রিজম ।
